Tracing the History and Use of Muscadine Grape Vines-Seedless Bunch and the Wine Grapevine
Before buying grapevines, many buyers consider planting vines for table grapes such as blue concord grape vine, black Fredonia grape vines, or white Niagara grapes. Seedless grapevines are popular for fresh eating, such as: Thompson's white grapevines, red flame seedless, concord blue seedless, and black reliance grapevines. Wine grapevines have grown popular as fast growing vines for home vineyards. The best grapevine wine varieties are: Zinfandel Grape, Merlot Grape, and Cabernet sauvignon Grape. The various grape colors are: crimson, red, black, white, purple, pink, and blue. Muscadine grape vines are planted in many vineyards. Unlike bunch grapes, muscadine grapes and scuppernong grapevines must be cross pollinated since male and female flowers grow separately.
The grape grown on vines grew in ancient lands as a food source and raw material for wine, both red wine and white wine. Ancient economies were based on grape vine production of raisins, fresh grape crops, and fine wine. Sugar content of the grape determined the quality of fine wine, grape sweetness, and raisin production. The skin of grapes affected the wine color of green, white, yellow, red, or purple-blue. The alcohol content of the grape increased with higher grape sugar content. European grapevines grew fruit in a bunch cluster, thus they were called bunch grapes. Biblical scripture quotes Jesus saying “I am the vine.” Jesus at the last supper told the apostles to “drink this [grape] wine in remembrance of me.” Scripture in the Old Testament Bible and the New Testament Bible refer to the “grape, grapevine, vineyard raisin, wine, grape leaves, fine wine, wine vinegar,” and we know the Bible importance of the grape vineyard to feed their culture and furnish fine wine to drink.
Modern hybrid grapevine research as grown seedless grapes that are useful as fresh fruit eating and especially for raisin production. Seedless grape clusters grow in colors of red, gold, white, blue, black, and purple. The white Thompson's seedless grape is a famous store grape.
Muscadine grapevines are native to American and the original scuppernong grapevine (white muscadine) was found growing in North Carolina. The American grapevines were sent to Europe as rootstock for European wine grapevines. The white scuppernong muscadine and the red, black, and blue muscadine grape can be made into fine wines and the grape seed are used as an antioxidant health benefit. Vinegar and wine vinegar can be made from the scuppernong grape and the muscadine grape. A female scuppernong grapevine must be pollinated with a male muscadine scuppernong or muscadine to product grapes. The male carlos scuppernong grape vine has been known to produce 100 pounds of grapes from a single grape vine. Wildlife animals like deer, quail, dove, squirrel, and duck eat the grapes and hide for cover in the grapevine leaves. Grape vine leaves in Europe are stuffed with meat and served as food.
